July 2013 Show and Tell Pictures

Members still found time to work on new projects along with preparing for the July Fabric dyeing workshop.  Several projects were a result of our group activities to include the "I Spy" charm square swap with novelty fabrics and the drawstring bag exchange with members from the Northern Virginia Modern Quilt Guild.

Name Tag Challenge

For about a year now I have been toying with the idea of a name tag challenge and I must admit that I myself have not yet made one. As I was sitting in our meeting yesterday I noticed Brooke’s handmade nametag and it lit a fire in me to finally get this done! Go Brooke, for being ahead of the game. I am ready to throw those sharpies and “Hello My Name is …” stickies out the window. Are you with me?! (okay, I guess we can keep a couple around).

So here is the challenge… Create a handmade (preferably quilted) name tag influenced by the BMQG logo. You can use the image directly or if you prefer you can use it as inspiration for the creation of your own unique design. You can make it any size/shape that you would like, just be sure that your name appears clearly enough to be read from across the room.

Deadline - October Meeting.

For some added inspiration check out Pintrest’s Quilty Name Tag Board.

For a peak at what some of the other MQG’s have come up with check out the list of links at the Ventura MQG site.

Modern Log Cabin Challenge to Benefit Southeast Early Headstart

Quilters are generous people. Our guild helps to provide quilts for each child at Kennedy Krieger Institute's Southeast Early Headstart Program. We're hosting modern log cabin challenge to benefit SEEHP. The rules are simple. Make any type of a modern log cabin quilt and bring it to the September meeting for show and tell. The quilts will then be hung in the Kennedy Krieger Institute's Family Center where they can be seen by visiting families before they head off with a book to the homes of the program's children.

Some folks asked for some ideas about modern log cabin quilts. There are lots of options -
Use a modern design like this one
Tallgrass Prairie Wonky Log Cabin
(Jacquie Gering from Tallgrass Prairie Studio has a good wonky log cabin tutorial here.)
Or use modern fabrics and a traditional design

Hyacinth Quilts

or use a log cabin technique
Bobbin's Nest Studio's Modern Crosses
Oh Fransson! Paintbox Quilt
Modern quilters don't like lots of rules so your imagination is the limit.

Fabric Dying with Malka Dubrawsky

It was hot. It was sweaty. It was worth it.

Yesterday, our guild hosted teacher/fabric designer/author Malka Dubrawsky for a fabric batiking/dying workshop. 25 quilters gathered at the Painting Workshop in Mt. Washington for a full day of waxing, watching and waiting for our hand patterned cloth to catch the dye, and turn into beautiful fabric. Here are some snap shots of our day.

Thanks Malka for a super fun day!

June 2013 Show and Tell Photos

Here's a quick look at what Baltimore Modern Quilters were up to as of the June 2013 meeting. There are a few quilts I was not able to photograph well enough to post so if you don't see yours here, that's why, and I'm sorry.

Whenever I review pictures from our meetings I'm astounded at the breadth and skill represented in our small group... you all are truly amazing!

Looking forward to seeing what everyone has been up to at our July meeting!
