At our August meeting we exchanged quilted postcards, submitted more items for our upcoming Quilt Bingo, shared a few more quilts for the Michael Miller MQG challenge, and received many more baby/toddler quilts to donate to the Early Head Start program we support.

August Meeting: Guest Speaker Megan Dougherty

Our guild welcomed Megan Dougherty, author of the Bitchy Stitcher blog.  Megan read favorite stories from her book, Quilting Isn't Funny, sharing her writing and quilting journey. We loved getting to know Megan and laughed a lot. More importantly, we have a new appreciation for the importance of finding time for laughter on our own journeys.  Megan also shared with us the Laughter Quilt project, a new quilt in progress. The Laughter Quilt is a signature quilt that will be made from signed blocks and  handwritten messages of things that make us laugh. Check out Megan's blog post for more details on how you can participate.

Weeks Ringle will teach Solids Revolution on Thursday, November 13, 2014

We are thrilled to announce that Weeks Ringle will be joining our guild to offer the workshop, "Solids Revolution" on November 13, from 9:30 until 4:00. We only have a few spots left, so register soon for a seat.

Piecing with solids offers new design opportunities for quilters and allows them to develop custom palettes. However, quilting becomes more obvious with solids than with prints so this class is unique in that it discusses both various methods for piecing with solids and also how to develop the best strategies for quilting with them.

  • Student supplies needed: sewing machine, rotary cutting equipment, a wide assortment of solid cotton quilting fabrics, extension cord, thread, seam ripper, notebook or journal, and any supplies you like to have handy when quilting.
  • Skill level: Adventurous beginner to advanced
Location: Woodbrook Baptist Church, 25 Stevenson Lane, Baltimore
Cost: $85 includes lunch
Time: 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM

To register for the workshop, submit payment to Paypal - Our email is baltimoremqg@gmail.com.

July Meeting

Our July meeting included a lecture and presentation by member Linda Schiffer, discussing the background behind quilted postcards, along with techniques and materials used to create them. We had a variety of examples as references, and ended with a name swap for those members that were interested in making and exchanging postcards.  It's a great opportunity to be creative and try new design ideas.

In addition, members shared their Modern Quilt Guild Michael Miller challenge projects.   There was a great range of project types from bags, placemats, a baby play mat, as well as small and large quilts.  We saw lots of creativity with the designs and gorgeous quilting.  Way to go Baltimore!

Many other in progress quilts and finishes were shown.  Take a look at the great work here.
