Mary Thomas who is now serving as Vice President (and who will continue in office until after the fall retreat in November) must retire due to personal and work issues (she is starting a new business). Thus the guild needs a new Vice President to begin serving in December, 2018. The duties of VP are to chair the bingo and retreat committees and to serve as backup to the President if that person cannot run a meeting. Please consider volunteering for this important office!
On behalf of the education committee, Marcia presented our planned workshops: Melanie Tuazon will teach in October; signups will open the week after our August meeting - Marcia will send an email announcement. Jacquie Gering will teach in March, 2019 (the committee will ask for input on a topic later). Chawne Kimber will teach in June, 2019 on Small Piecing. The committee is still looking for a teacher for October ’19. Marcia will send out an email asking for input from members. The committee is considering Cindy Grisdelda, Mary Kerr, Tim Natarr (mapmaking with fabric), Heather Jones, Sherry Lynn Woods, Yvonne Fuchs and MJ Kinman. Other ideas are welcome as well.
The palette and design challenge for the QuiltCon charity challenge has been set. Rose asked for one or two volunteers to chair this quilt project and eight to ten members to commit to working on assembly (after the general membership makes blocks, according to the design the project committee chooses). Please email Rose if you are interested.
Phyllis announced that the guild now has 92 paid members. There were four new members present at this meeting (Megan, Rebecca, Debbie, and Tina).
Andee presented Erin Neuland with a quilt made by members for her new son, Caleb.
Andee spoke about our planned bingo event, scheduled for Friday, September 21 at The Lodge on Frederick Road in Catonsville. Doors will open at 6 p.m., bingo starts at 7 p.m. Tickets will be available soon (are printing) - they will cost $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Please invite your friends and family - this event has been very popular in the past. There will be food available, vending by a Scout troop (yet to be determined). Attendees can bring their own liquors.
The guild needs each member to make and donate at least one prize if at all possible. There are already in progress five major quilt prizes for special games.
Kathy and Linda are still collecting blocks for the last quilt project. Please mail your blocks to Kathy a.s.a.p. In addition, we need such things as placemat sets, tote bags, pouches, etc (watch for a blog post on this topic) to serve as prizes for the regular games (20 to 25 of these).
The money we make (and have made) from the bingo event will go towards building a reserve for a guild quilt show (we need about $25 - 30K for this fund).
Andee also discussed the fall retreat scheduled for November 15-18 at Pearlstone Retreat Center. We have reserved enough rooms for 22 members to attend for all four days; there currently are 10 registered. We have the opportunity to return some of these reserved rooms to Pearlstone this week if they are not reserved. We also have 8 day attendees registered at present (and there will be more slots for days available). Please invite your friends to attend! Classes, swaps, etc. are in planning.
The program committee would like to have a zipper demos at the August meeting. Please volunteer to give one if you feel qualified! Contact Shelly or Andee. August will also be the time to share your UFO Challenge and Head Start Star Challenge quilts.
There was a discussion/presentation on making fabric postcards at the meeting. Also mentioned was a FaceBook group that swaps fabric postcards (‘Handmade Fabric Postcard Swap’). This is the stiffening/batting that Andee prefers to use:
Rose spent some time asking for input and a midyear review from each of the Quilting With Friends groups listed on our Google page spreadsheet. Quilting With Friends - Columbia meets on the third Saturday every month (next meeting July 21 at JoAnn’s ETC in Columbia Crossing). QWF-Catonsville will meet on August 4th (and Gayne will be visiting). QWF-Bears Paw meets at Bears Paw Quilt Shop in Towson on the last Monday of the month (next meeting July 23). QWF-Sewing with Kids has met twice. Other groups are being organized. All of these groups invite any members who are interested to attend any meeting!
Show and Tell was varied and exciting as usual.

Pat Simrell showed four lined drawstring bags she made for Bingo prizes.
She also shared a Birch Tree quilt she made with scraps.
Judy Hyatt showed a quilt she designed for her granddaughter (look at the quilting stitches on the back!)
Ann Hussein showed a One Fabric fussy cut quilt.
Barbara Schafer made a spiral layout with many purple HST's.
Janet Schoenfeld showed two quilts (finished before her shoulder surgery) inspired by Kathy Dougherty.
Daniela Syed shared a pixelated circle project she completed as a baby quilt.
Phyllis Cook showed two quilts. The first was made with blocks she won at a MQA block lottery (she put the too small ones on the back).
The second quilt is called Confetti.
Phyllis also made a simple backpack like the one
she likes to use when riding bicycles.
Maria O'Haver shared a quilt that resulted from a Gyleen Fitzgerald mystery. The back is pieced with the 2" squares she cuts from her scraps.
Laura Battatzis shared a dress (off the rack) she added applique to from a design by Carolyn Friedlander. She made two bags (Maker's Tote and Pouch) and finished piecing a hexagon design.
